This Week's Quote:
"Teachers and schools today are too busy teaching kids what to think, instead of teaching them how to think..."
-- Earl Schoaff
QUICK EXTRA: Go see this flu blog, I haven't room for it here
1. Revision of the Definition of Psychiatric Illness
You've seen and heard the furore about mammograms, of course. One group of doctors tried to point out that mammograms are pretty much a waste of time and cutting back or stopping them altogether would be a good idea. All hell broke loose, with angry frenzy from the hundreds of thousands of crooked doctors who are killing and swindling women with the mammogram scam. They don't care that mammograms are what Professor Sam Epstein MD calls a crime against humanity; they are out to protect their dollars and killing women is not important. It was not a debate; it was a howl of greed being frustrated!
No time to go into all that here, but see some of my thoughts on my alternative-doctor-blog.
What I want to write about is another civil war which has broken out in the medical profession; this time in the psychology arena. You may know of the famous book the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. It is supposed to be an inventory and description of all recognized psychiatric diseases. Over the years this stupid reference book has taken a grip to the point where "If it's not in the DSM, you're a faker or liar; you're not unwell"!
The trouble is that there is almost NO science in psychiatry. Psychiatrists are mainly drug pushers on a level with cocaine and crack dealers, but legal.
So what's the furore about? There is a rush to rewrite almost the entire manual. Critics say this "revision" has gone way beyond proven science (true) and that there is a push to expand the range of psychiatric illnesses vastly (so more drug sales, of course, neat huh?) According to two eminent retired psychiatrists, Robert Spitzer and Allen Frances, the new manual, to be known as DSM-V, will extend definitions of mental illnesses so broadly that tens of millions of people will be given unnecessary and risky drugs. Leaders of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), which publishes the manual, have shot back, accusing the pair of being motivated by their own financial interests - a charge they deny.
Spitzer and Frances accused the APA of planning unworkable changes and making grandiose claims. In a separate editorial in the magazine Psychiatric Times, Frances complained that most of the authors are university-based researchers who are cut off from typical doctors and patients.
Spitzer and Frances also criticise the fact that members of the various DSM-V work groups have had to sign confidentiality agreements. "The main problem is that we don't know what they're doing," says Spitzer.
The row is set to come to a head next month when the proposed changes will be published online.
Soon, if you cry too much over a lost love or a deceased relative, you're sick and will be given drugs, because grieving isn't appropriate, except short-term (well, that makes me a loony! I cried almost every day for a year when my first wife ran off with the odd-job man...)*
The stupidity of all this is that some very sick people, with strange variants of schizophrenia, don't actually fit the criteria of the DSM, so they are not sick, right? Yeah, right...
There might be good news for some though. What was formerly called gender identity disorder (gays and transexuals) sounds pretty bad. But that might be changed to gender dysphoria, not nearly so pejorative.
*PS. now if I met the odd-job man I'd shake his hand and say "Thank you!" I got Viv!

2. Cancer, The Lunatic Fringe
Orthodox doctors are constantly complaining about the "lunatic fringe" in cancer cures, or whatever name you want to give to it. Where's the science? they keep asking.
Where indeed?
There is definitely a lunatic fringe out there, with claims such as cancer is a fungus (Simoncini: what about genes, diet, carcinogens in the environment, Dr Simoncini?); cancer is all caused by Fasciolopsis buski and iso-propyl alcohol (Hulda Reger Clark, who claims she cured 100 consecutive cases of cancer BUT: she diagnosed them all herself, without supportive x-rays, bloods tests, biopsy etc and she pronounced them all cured herself, usually 1 or 2 weeks later). It would be laughable if it were not criminal and if she didn't attract an amazing army of followers who believe her ridiculous B*S*.
Nice work if you can get it Hulda. She got very rich. A lot of people died. All you hear about on the Internet is people who survived and she got the credit. 99% of her "cures" were self-sustained by the patient and not her crackpot theories working.
The reason Clark found these two pathogens on literally everybody is that she them herself and was too dumb to know she was diagnosing her own medical condition on everyone she "tested". I wrote about "electronic dowsing", which is all this is, in Virtual Medicine.
Have you heard of the "asparagus cure"? That's another one. Apparently all cancers go away if you just eat asparagus! Wouldn't that be nice?
What about zeolite? Whether or not zeolite has any benefit on toxin burdens within the body (the jury is out), one thing I know for sure: the science on which the patent was issued for curing cancer is totally fraudulent (and is laughable as well). The "study" you read about they claim cured 70% of patients is not a study at all and claims made against it are fraudulent. The MLMers are just plain liars, trying to move product.
Finally (then I'd better shut up), there is Protocel, Cancell and all the other laughable and dangerous spins offs of Jim Sheridan's claims (I almost said Sheridan's work--but he didn't actually do any work. It was all based on a dream, he says).
Again he told lies and all his followers since perpetuate these lies. The claim you will hear over and over is the the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) studied Protocell and was favorably impressed. That's a bald lie to steal dollars from gullible sick people. The NCI stated exactly the opposite. They said it was worthless and complained that Sheridan and his cronies refused to provide any hard data, just testimonials. Read about the Cancell scam here.
Sheridan was a MADMAN and his followers are either fools or crooks. There are a few hangers on who write about it in their books, to make themselves look good (they call it "research", surfing the web and looking for cancer "cures"). Let me set it straight: Cancell, Entelev, Protocell, Jim's Juice, or whatever you want to call it, kills people. Period.
The main identifiable ingredients are inositol, nitric acid, sodium sulfite, potassium hydroxide, sulfuric acid, and catechol. Sheridan also claimed his product contained "crocinic acid" as a component; there is no such known compound. Even if it wasn't a fraudulent and non-existent chemical, why would you take it, with all those other acids, when the rest of the world knows that alkaline is the way to go?
But it's worse. The peddlers of this junk don't just want to kill you with their acid formula but want you to stop taking vitamin C and vitamin E. That will kill you even faster. We need these substances and you need them MORE when you are battling cancer. Sheridan, of course, had no medical training. But that's allright, apparently, because he believed he was on a mission from God and didn't charge money for his "cure".
Aw, p-l-e-e-a-s-e!!
Just remember that everything that is attacked isn't great and wonderful. There seems to be a silly notion out there that if the FDA denounces it, it must ipso facto be good. Not true.

3. My Latest eReport: Candida and Yeast Superhighway
After a number of requests asking what's next in the "Scott-Mumby Library"? I'm pleased to announce a major new eBook on the problems of diagnosing and successfully treating Candida and yeast problems.
Actually, I coined a special term "The Moldy Patient" (American spelling) for those individuals who seem to have this condition. It's like their bodies are a fertile garden in which yeasts and molds like to grow. They get dysbiosis of the gut, intestinal fermentation syndrome, Thrush, athlete's foot and all kinds of related problems. They are often hypersensitive to mold and yeast, as well as simply infected, which greatly complicates the picture.
Candida is a word you will hear bandied about and there is no question that many cases are due to this organism. But it is far from the only candidate (no pun intended! well, maybe...) Other fermenting organisms include ordinary food yeasts and we swallow those by the bucket load: bread, vinegar, beer, wine; it's hidden in many manfactured foods and even companies boasting "natural" flavorings, like Amy's Kitchen brand, have been caught using yeast extract instread of MSG.
The trouble is the yeast extract does contain glutamates, so beware: read ALL labels.
And this is another reason to stay off sugar: fermenting organisms use sugar as the main food source and turn it into alcohols and other more obnoxious chemicals. I have likened this to an "on-board brewery" and actually had several cases I helped with legal testimony, because they could prove they had not been drinking but the courts refused to believe them, because they had alcohol in their blood.
All of these cases were found guilty in Britain because the law simply states that it is an offence to have more than a certain amount of alcohol in the blood: the law makes no allowance whatever for how it got there! But at least they got sympathetic treatment from the judges!
Anyway, tired of reading all the "expert" housewives' version of medical advice, I decided it was time to put some of my experience down in paper (well, digital paper!) I've been treating Candida since the early 80s and I'd like to think I know a lot more than most about diagnosing and treating this condition.

4.Behave Yourselves Or Die, Boys!
Here’s a worry: bad behavior as a kid has been linked to early death in men.
The findings are from a study that began following 411 South London boys who were 8 to 9 years old in 1961. Among those who at age 10 displayed antisocial behavior (such as skipping school or being troublesome or dishonest) and who also were convicted of a crime by the age of 18, one in six (16.3%) had died or become disabled by the time they turned 48.
That's nearly seven times higher than the one in 40 (2.6%) death or disability rate among men who stayed out of trouble when they were young, the study authors noted in their report in the December issue of the Journal of Public Health.
What was surprising is that the increase was not limited to substance abuse or other mental health problems known to be linked with an antisocial lifestyle, but included premature death and disability from a wide variety of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease and cancer.
It’s not too surprising. The life of a young gangster must be pretty stressful, always trying to stay out of the hands of the police. We know stress raises cortisol levels and cortisol is behind most aging mischief.
We can't be practical and think of this as a "cull" of bad boys: their genes are all over the pool by the time they are 20 years old. Too late!

5. Beer May NOT Be A Man’s Drink!
A compound found in beer, xanthohumol, which comes from hops, is known to block the male hormone testosterone, which plays a supposed role in the development of prostate cancer. Anastrozole (Aramidex and similar) is used to deliberately block the transformation of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, which is an estrogen.
Scientists are now eyeing it a possible drug intervention.
All well and interesting.
But my question is this: could an anti-testosterone substance in beer be the cause of so-called “brewer’s droop”. If you are too genteel to know such a slang expression, it means flaccid penis, due to pot belly and too many beers.
We wine drinkers don’t get it!
Beer is notorious at putting on belly fat. Maybe it’s through feminizing, by blocking testosterone and favoring estrogen mimics, which result from blocked testosterone pathways. Estrogen-like hormones in men definitely puts on obesity and makes prostate cancer more likely.
I’m sorry the researchers didn’t consider this, which is the first thing I thought of when I read the study…
What a horrifying thought for some men! Beer is supposed to be so manly! Yet they are turning themselves into premature cissies!
The findings presented Dec. 9 at a conference of the American Association for Cancer Research in Houston.

6. What's In A Word?
Scourge.
I used this last week and was asked what it meant.
Originally it means to strip the skin (excoriate, from Latin: ex-corrigier) as in whipping. Corrigia may have been a Celtic word, meaning thong. There are references in the Bible to Christ being "scourged".
But it is now broadened to mean: a source of widespread dreadful affliction and devastation such as that caused by pestilence or war. Inflicting severe suffering, vengeance, or punishment.
So I used scourge to refer to cancer and other diseases. Of course politicians are a scourge in every country of the world!

So, that's all for this week!
Be well; find the sacred in all you do, otherwise don't do it!
